Hackenberg finishes second at Elite 11

August, 14, 2012
Not that it came as a big surprise, but current Penn State commit Christian Hackenberg (Fork Union, Va./Fork Union) tied for second at the Elite 11.

Twenty-five quarterbacks earned invites, and only Asiantii Woulard (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) finished ahead of Hackenberg. Max Browne (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline) tied for second.

"(Hackenberg) is extremely gifted physically -- maybe some of best physical tools as a passer that this class has to offer," ESPN Senior National Recruiting Analyst Tom Luginbill said. "But I would like to see more consistent decision making with his throws down the middle of the field."

The four-star quarterback had six multiple-interception games last season, so those lapses in decision-making likely weren't limited to just one week. Opposing coaches often disguised blitzes and coverages and threw everything they had at Hackenberg, so another year of seasoning certainly can't hurt.

Regardless of those middle-of-the-field throws, Hackenberg boasts as much potential in this class as any other quarterback. He's ranked as the top Class of 2013 signal caller and is ESPN's No. 16 overall recruit.

If he remains committed to the Nittany Lions, he'll be their highest-rated prospect since defensive end Maurice Evans in 2006 (No. 11).
