2014 Watch List OL picks Michigan

By Chantel Jennings

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- When Watch List offensive lineman Mason Cole (Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake) woke up Sunday morning in Ann Arbor, he knew he wanted to be a Wolverine. It was his third trip to Ann Arbor, and while he still had a meeting with offensive line coach Darrell Funk as well as the Michigan-Illinois basketball game to attend with the other prospects, he knew everything had come together.

“Just spending time with players and recruits,” Cole said. “I knew it was the right place. I knew it was home. … I knew it was the best place for me and I just loved it.”

Cole told his parents -- who both made the trip to Ann Arbor, as well -- on Sunday morning, but he knew he wanted to return to Florida to tell his high school coach before he made anything official with Michigan coach Brady Hoke.

But once he spoke with his high school coach on Monday, Cole made a call to Hoke in the afternoon.

“He was excited,” Cole said of Hoke. “He said he saw it coming, most of the coaches did. But he was just excited. All of the coaches were just happy to have me.”

Cole said he was able to speak with nearly every offensive coach when he made the commitment.

And the coaches weren’t the only ones who saw it coming. Fellow 2014 commits Wilton Speight (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School) and Michael Ferns (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville), who were both in town this past weekend, had good feelings coming out of their time spent with the big offensive lineman. The only 2014 commit not in town over the weekend was Watch List defensive tackle Bryan Mone (Salt Lake City/Highland).

After choosing the Wolverines over Florida State, Clemson and Notre Dame (and making visits to each school), Cole is excited to be able to relax and be done with the recruiting process.

“Now I can just focus on high school and be a high school kid,” Cole said. “I can go out and do my best to win a state championship with my team and then go on from there to the next level.”

Michigan also happens to have two more offers out to prospects at East Lake -- 2014 Watch List WR Artavis Scott and 2015 athlete George Campbell. Campbell was among this weekend's visitors; Scott has been to Ann Arbor but did not make this trip. Either way, landing Cole could prove to be an even bigger get than it seems on the surface.
