Tales From The Road: Michigan

By Tom VanHaaren

Every Wednesday, WolverineNation will take a look at Michigan's week in recruiting in Tales From The Road.

This week's targets: Michigan is still searching for linebackers, and after a stellar performance at the Chicago NFTC, linebacker Jimmie Swain IV (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit) received a visit to his school from the Michigan coaches. The coaches made the rounds all over the country and will be visiting the schools of wide receiver Artavis Scott (Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake), defensive end Da'Shawn Hand (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge), safety Montae Nicholson (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) and 2015 teammates Ricky DeBerry and Garrett Taylor of Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher's. Running backs coach Fred Jackson also made his way to Texas to offer 2015 prospect Cameron Townsend (Missouri City, Texas/Ridge Point).

Area of interest: Michigan has been targeting the Virginia/Washington D.C. area heavily, and rightfully so. That region has been a hot bed of talent in recent years and produced 2013 running back commit Derrick Green (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) for the Wolverines. With 2014 targets including Hand and defensive tackle Andrew Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith), Michigan will try to create a pipeling to that region. With Green on board and 2014 quarterback commit Wilton Speight (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), Michigan has some built-in recruiters as well.

Word on the street: Much has been asked about the linebacker situation for the 2014 class. The coaching staff is searching for an outside linebacker and the main target is Chase Winovich (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). However, it looks as though a few more linebacker prospects will be evaluated in the weeks to come. Swain was mentioned above, and he is a prospect to watch in this category. Adding length and size will be a priority for Michigan, and having Michael Ferns (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville) already in the fold is an excellent start.

What to watch: Speight will be participating in the Elite 11 competition on May 17 in San Francisco. Speight is hoping to earn an invitation to the Elite 11 finals and The Opening in Oregon. The event will take place at the 49ers practice facility, where former Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh is the head coach.
