ARLINGTON, Texas – Things are about to get real for the Dallas Cowboys, especially the defense.

“We’ve got to do everything we can do to get better because the New York Giants are good the last time I checked,” defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said. “They’re pretty darn good. They’ll be ready to roll.”

The Cowboys defense feels ready to roll itself after a productive offseason in transitioning from Kiffin’s 4-3 scheme and effective work in three preseason games. The first unit did not allow a touchdown in its preseason work and forced three turnovers.

“You’re going to have to improve each game through the season if you want to peak at the right time, but I think we put in great work,” linebacker Sean Lee said. “But we’re going to have to have a great week to prepare for the Giants.”

The Cowboys split with the Giants last season, but were fairly effective against Eli Manning and the New York offense, giving up just 26 first downs in two games. Manning only had one touchdown and one pick in two games.

“In the preseason you definitely find out what guys want to play and how they’re going to play and how they’re going to react to certain situations,” defensive end DeMarcus Ware said. “I feel like we’ve got the right core guys.”
