Bills TD celebration brings out romantic in Jerry Jones
By Tim MacMahon
It’s not often that the opposing team’s owner will enjoy a touchdown celebration, but there was an exception after the Buffalo Bills’ lone score Sunday at Cowboys Stadium.
After catching a touchdown pass, Bills receiver David Nelson jogged over to his girlfriend, handed her the football and gave her a hug. Kelsi Reich happens to be a Cowboys cheerleader who was performing on the Buffalo sideline.
The fact that the Cowboys had a commanding lead ensured that Jones was in a good mood, but he wouldn’t have minded the gesture under any circumstances. After all, he is a man who has great appreciation for attractive marketing opportunities.
“I thought it was a neat as a pin,” Jones said Tuesday on KRLD-FM. “Frankly, our cheerleaders get the recognition that they get. I know it was a surprise to her, but I sure enjoyed looking at the highlights on ESPN and coverage like that to focus on that part of it. There’s a lot about sports. A little romance thrown in from time to time is another big plus.”
Nelson, a Wichita Falls, Texas, native who lives in Dallas, had said during the week that he planned to do something “fun” with Reich if he scored a touchdown. He toned it down due to the fact that the Bills were still down two touchdowns after his 3-yard catch in the second quarter.
“If it would have been a better situation, I would have done a little more,” Nelson told reporters after the game. “Being down 14, I’m not going to celebrate too much.”
The Bills got blown out, 44-7, but at least Nelson gave his girlfriend a gift she’ll never forget.
“What a special day today was! I feel so blessed & so proud of @DavidNelson86! Thanks for my game ball, I wont let go of it :) happiest girl!” Reich wrote on Twitter.
Jones laughed when it was suggested that the celebration could have put Reich’s cheerleading job in jeopardy.
“I haven’t talked to her about it, but the last thing that occurred to me was to be upset about anything,” Jones said. After pausing for a beat, he quipped, “Men, that’s nature.”
