Matt Johnson says he could practice next week

By Calvin Watkins

IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys made an interesting decision Thursday by cutting safety Mana Silva. It means the Cowboys have basically Danny McCray and Eric Frampton as the only healthy safeties on the roster.

Gerald Sensabaugh is expected to play Monday night against the Chicago Bears after missing last week's game with a calf strain.

A reason why the Cowboys are going light at this position is the possible return of rookie safety Matt Johnson, who hasn't played due to hamstring and back injuries.

"Today was the best I felt," Johnson said.

The rookie said he got an epidural nearly two weeks ago to relieve pressure on his back. Johnson said he expects to practice during the bye week and hopes to make his debut Oct. 14 at Baltimore.

If Johnson returns to the field, the Cowboys health at safety should improve if Sensabaugh has no setbacks.
