Bryant: Tony Romo has 'good shot' at MVP
By Tim MacMahon
IRVING, Texas -- Dez Bryant appreciates the love from the former No. 88, but he doesn’t think Michael Irvin’s MVP prediction will be proved right.
Irvin declared on NFL Network that Bryant was his pick to win MVP, an honor never bestowed on a receiver in the 58-year history of the award. Asked what it would take to become an MVP, Bryant laughed and said, “Being a quarterback.”
That’s a legitimate point. Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson was the MVP last season after coming within a first down of breaking the single-season rushing record, but the award went to quarterbacks in 10 of the previous 12 seasons. As far as Bryant is concerned, quarterbacks should dominate the MVP voting, “because they’re the bosses, the CEOs on the field.”
Bryant’s hope is that Tony Romo will join Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers on the list of active quarterbacks who have been an MVP.
“Hopefully this year, I believe Tony’s got a good shot at being MVP,” Bryant said.
Romo hasn’t been to the Pro Bowl since after the 2009 season and has never received an MVP vote. That could change if the Cowboys contend this season.
Romo, who threw for 4,903 yards and 28 touchdowns last season, will put up big numbers if he stays healthy. He is working behind an upgraded offensive line and has an arsenal of weapons featuring Bryant, Jason Witten, Miles Austin and DeMarco Murray.
“I honestly feel like if we [do] everything we’re supposed to do, he’ll get it. Without a doubt,” Bryant said of Romo as an MVP candidate. “He’ll get it. If he gets it, I already know, hey, I was part of it. And that’s just as good to me.”
However, Bryant couldn’t help but smile when Irvin’s prediction was mentioned. He’s flattered by the praise, especially considering the source.
“It always means a lot when Michael Irvin is saying something good about you, just because of the history of the number,” Bryant said. “I look at it as a great challenge to try to fill his shoes, Drew [Pearson] and Mike’s. There’s no pressure. I’m just having fun with it.”
