Cowboys wake-up call: Day 14

By Todd Archer

OXNARD, Calif. -- Every day of Dallas Cowboys training camp we’ll offer up a wake-up call that provides a quick review of the previous day and a preview of the current day.

Today’s schedule: The Cowboys travel to San Diego and will not practice or have a walk-through. There is no Jason Garrett news conference.

Quick thoughts on Tuesday’s practice:

“We work those situations a ton,” Garrett said. “We work them all throughout the season and this is kind of a big bulk installation for us. You put those Big Ben plays in and some of those end-of-game, end-of-half situations and you really talk them through. The interesting thing is they’re all kind of different. But somehow, some way on offense and defense and in the kicking game, you have to have a plan for all of them. We’ve talked about the plays we like, the coverages we like, when we like them, why we like them and you try to get that out to the players and just see how they function. We’ll continue to do it, you’ll probably see some [Tuesday] afternoon, throughout training camp and we’ll work on them during the year, really on Fridays every week. It’s such an important part of the game and we’re getting better and better at them.” What I’m watching: Since I will be on a train to San Diego, I think I’ll watch the Pacific Ocean as we cruise down the coast.

They said it: “The more experience you have, veterans like myself, it’s less and less but just like anything you’ve got to tune things up and tighten it up. I think it’s good to go against somebody and not know the looks that they’re playing or the opponent and just have to play on the fly. I think that’s good preparation for all of us. Coach Garrett, we trust him in how he approaches that and we’ll be ready to go. We’ll get plenty of work.” – Tight end Jason Witten on how much work he needs in preseason games.
