IRVING, Texas -- Adrien Spencer is used to being in his brother Anthony’s shadow.
At the Cowboys’ Valley Ranch practice facility, he actually is in his brother’s shadow with his locker just a few stalls to the right.
Adrien Spencer, a cornerback, is attending the Cowboys’ rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. Anthony Spencer is coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance and making the move from outside linebacker to defensive end in the Cowboys’ defensive shift.
“Every brother gets in their fights,” Adrien said. “I tried not to pick on him because he’s always been bigger than me, but right now it’s all love. He’s kind of like a father figure to me right now because he brought me under his wing and he’s providing things that I didn’t have before. It’s a blessing to have a brother in this situation and for him to care about me and our family.”
The facial similarities are striking down to their beards. But their statures are different with Anthony coming in at 6-foot-3, 250 pounds and Adrien 5-11, 184 pounds.
“I was always in his shadow, but we played different positions, so I didn’t really look at it like that,” Adrien said. “It is what it is, but I would want to make my own name.”
Anthony came into the NFL as a first-round pick in 2007 and has developed into a solid player. After earning the trip to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl in January, he took his little brother with him.
Adrien’s introduction to the NFL was delayed because of a torn Achilles suffered after his senior season at Bowling Green. Anthony had him move to Dallas and continue his rehab at Michael Johnson Performance in McKinney. He was working out last week when he got the invite to the rookie camp.
Adrien’s time with the Cowboys could come to an end when the rookie camp ends Sunday, but he’s hoping it will continue.
“I get a lot of jokes, people messing around with me, calling me Baby Spence. ‘We need to change your name,’ stuff like that, but it’s all fun,” he said.
