IRVING, Texas -- Remember when there was worry Tony Romo might get away from the Cowboys in 2014 because they couldn’t use the franchise tag in 2014?
“It meant absolutely nothing,” Romo’s agent, R.J. Gonser said.
Both sides knew of the language in Romo’s deal that would not have voided the quarterback’s contract in time for the club to use the franchise tag next March. From a practical standpoint, the Cowboys would not have been able to place the tag on Romo even if they were able to do so because it could have cost between $26-28 million next year.
Gonser has worked with Romo since 2003 and became his agent within the last two years. This was his first deal as a lead negotiator, but he deflected praise to the team at Creative Artists Agency, including fellow agents, Jimmy Sexton, Ben Dogra and Tom Condon.
“Our team here is involved in every facet of it,” Gonser said. “Everybody’s on the same page. We throw out ideas. It’s the best practices. It’s not who’s got all the answers.”
