World high jump champion Svetlana Shkolina out with injury

MOSCOW -- World high jump champion Svetlana Shkolina of Russia will be unable to defend her title in Beijing due to an Achilles tendon tear.

Shkolina injured herself while competing at the Russian national championships on Tuesday and will be out for several months, missing the world championships which start Aug. 22.

Coach Sergei Klyugin tells the Tass news agency that Shkolina will undergo an operation in the coming days and "will definitely be out until the winter."

The 29-year-old Shkolina won the world title in Moscow two years ago with a jump of 2 meters, 3 centimeters, matching the personal best she set on her way to winning bronze at the 2012 Olympics.
