Let's go inside the numbers for the Armed Forces Bowl, courtesy of ESPN Stats and Information. The game between SMU and Army will be played at SMU's Ford Stadium on Thu., Dec. 30 (11 a.m., ESPN):

* Army is appearing in its 5th all-time bowl game (2-2 record), and looking for its first bowl win since the 1985 Peach Bowl. SMU will play in its 13th bowl game (5-6-1 record). The Mustangs drilled Nevada in last year’s Hawaii Bowl 45-10.

* SMU apparently doesn’t enjoy playing service academy teams. Since 1967, the Mustangs are 2-11 against the academies, with the wins coming in 1993 and 1998 against Navy. Over that stretch, SMU is 2-7 vs Navy, 0-3 vs Air Force and 0-1 vs Army.

* The fact that SMU enters this game with a winning record gives it a decided advantage over Army. The Black Knights have lost 22 straight games against teams that were above .500 at game time. The last such win came in 2005, a 38-10 win over Arkansas State (5-4).
