Player of the Week: Big 12

September, 17, 2012
We live in an instant gratification society with ever-shortening attention spans.

In college football, that most often plays out in player transfers. Not getting enough playing time? Lose out on a position battle?

Transfer and try it somewhere else.

Sure, it's not explicitly wrong. I'd never blame a player for doing it.

That said, there's something admirable about losing a position battle and sticking it out, supporting the starter and continuing to work hard, hoping for a shot.

Nobody did that better than J.W. Walsh this week, and the Oklahoma State quarterback is my Player of the Week in the Big 12, narrowly edging out David Ash of Texas.

It was fitting that Oklahoma State fans held their breath and kissed the 2012 season goodbye after quarterback Wes Lunt went down, clutching his knee. Nothing ends a good day of football more quickly than the future of your program going down on the first drive of the game.

It didn't take long for Walsh to give the Cowboys reason for hope, even if Lunt can't come back in time for Oklahoma State's conference opener against Texas in Stillwater on Sept. 29.

Lunt helped OSU score on its first eight possessions and stuffed the stat sheet full enough to please even the most skeptical of observers.

He finished with 347 yards and four touchdowns on 21-of-30 passing, adding 73 yards and a touchdown on just six carries.

What more could you ask for?

The next two weeks will be interesting. Expect coach Mike Gundy to decline comment on anything involving Lunt's knee or his possible return.

Saturday, though, was a day that could have been filled with drama. OSU's defense stepped up and gave Walsh plenty of margin for error, even though he didn't need it.

A team effort from the Cowboys prevented any drama on Saturday, but Walsh provided some much-needed continuity for the Oklahoma State offense. He takes home the award for Week 3.
