K-State's Texas dominance will be tested
The leftover crowd serenaded both teams with the chant, "We own Texas! We own Texas! We own Texas!"
One final indignity for the Red Raiders: being showered with a chant that was once reserved for only the boys in burnt orange.
The chant was born because it's true, and it's never been more true than it is now. Kansas State has won its last nine games against teams from Texas, including a 5-0 run in 2011.
Walk around any Kansas State game this year and you'll see the cheeky shirt that commemorates that run. The school had "Texas State Champs" shirts made with the scores of each game on the back and logos from Baylor, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Texas, who all fell victim to K-State.
The Wildcats omitted the win over North Texas, but the Mean Green are part of that nine-game winning streak, too.
The Wildcats are a third of the way through a Texas trio to close its 2012 run to the BCS National Championship game. This week, K-State travels to the same field where it last lost to a Texas team.
That night was a memorable one for Baylor, which battled a weather delay but beat K-State to reach a bowl game for the first time since 1994. That same night, future Heisman winner Robert Griffin III proposed to his girlfriend, capping a dream night for a memorable Baylor team.
These same Bears are looking for another memorable night this time around. Baylor must find a pair of wins with three games remaining against K-State, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, all ranked opponents.
It all starts with No. 1, though. If the Bears can pull the upset, they can certainly expect yet another storming of the field.
"They have a lot going for them, they play great football, and they play disciplined football. And yeah, they are No. 1. It is what it is," quarterback Nick Florence told reporters this week. "Our goal is for them (to) not be No. 1 when they leave Waco, so we are going for it and that's the way we have to approach the game."
And if K-State wins instead, moving to within a game of the national title game and earning a 10th consecutive win against Texas teams?
Well, the purple folks that travel to Waco will surely have a chant ready once again.
