Oklahoma City OK with Mean Green
By Tim MacMahon
DENTON -- The Mean Green got exactly what they wanted: a trip up Interstate 35 to Oklahoma City.
The price they've got to pay is playing No. 2 seed Kansas State, but nobody at North Texas had any complaints. There was a roar at the Pourhouse, the Denton sports bar where UNT had its official watching party, when North Texas flashed across the screen. The excitement was about proximity, not a 15 seed.
"We need to go to Oklahoma City and show the NCAA and the rest of the country that we can follow our team," athletic director Rick Villarreal said into a microphone at the front of the bar. "That's important."
Coach Johnny Jones said Oklahoma City was his preferred destination with New Orleans running a distant second. The Mean Green promised the folks who make the two-hour drive that it'd be worth it.
"We'll put on a show for our fans," power forward George Odufuwa said.
