Dallas Colleges: Baseball
The two teams will play again on Monday night with a berth in the Super Regional at stake.
Making only his sixth career start, Stone (3-1) used offspeed pitches to baffle the Patriots, who hit .392 and scored 21 runs in winning their first two regional games.
Austin Elkins broke up the no-hitter when he cracked a double past first baseman Max Muncy with one out in the sixth, and Ronnie Mitchell followed with an RBI double to left-center to cut the lead to 6-1. Two batters later, Stone left to a standing ovation and reliever Ryan Smith struck out Landon Anderson to end the threat.
After scratching across single runs against starter Jay Calhoun (3-3) in the first and second innings, the Bears erupted for four more in the third on Evatt's blast and a two-run error by Patriots third baseman Kenny Hatcher.
An inning later, Evatt preserved Stone's no-hitter when he leaped above the nine-foot left-field fence to rob Boomer Collins of a homer.
Max Muncy and Cal Towey added home runs in the eighth inning for Baylor.
The Red Raiders completed their season with a 29-26 overall record and a 7-17 mark in Big 12 play that wasn't good enough to earn a spot in the conference tournament. It was the lowest conference win total for Tech since it won five Southwest Conference games in 1990.
Tim Tadlock was named interim head coach, and the search for Spencer's replacement will begin immediately, the school said.
Spencer arrived in Lubbock in July 2007, serving one season as associate head coach under Larry Hays. Spencer became head coach when Hays retired after the 2008 season.
In four seasons with Spencer as head coach, Tech went 115-112 overall and 44-61 in the Big 12 and failed to reach the NCAA tournament.
Texas A&M right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling is the only Big 12 or state player on ESPN.com's 2012 preseason All-America baseball team.
Stripling started last season as the Aggies' closer, earning four saves, before moving to the rotation and leading the nation in wins with a 14-2 record. He struck out 113 with just 18 walks and posted a 2.29 ERA.
The Southlake Carroll product was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the ninth round of last year's MLB draft but elected to stay in College Station for his senior season.
The Aggies are No. 14 in ESPN.com's preseason Power Rankings, and Texas is No. 15. Rice is the state's highest-ranked team at No. 4.
