Dallas Colleges: George Steinbrenner

OSU QB Weeden had run-in with The Boss

July, 27, 2010
IRVING, Texas -- The New York Yankees drafted Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden in the second round of the 2002 draft and that day OSU's projected starting quarterback received a phone call from late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.

Not long after that, Weeden got his first encounter with the man everyone associated with the Yankees and baseball called, The Boss.

"When I was in Tampa my rookie year -- he's from Tampa so he was always around -- the Yankees were on a 10-game losing streak, so he was not a happy camper, so everybody was kind of like, 'Let's just stay away from The Boss," Weeden said, telling the tale to a group of reporters duriung Day 2 of the Big 12 Conference football Media Days. "In rookie ball, it's different, you don't have any fans, you're just sitting around watching games.

"So, everybody's sitting there and everybody sees The Boss and everybody kind of scoots this way, like, 'I don't want him sitting by me.' He was an intimidating guy, but I tell you what, he did something right. The Yankees are one of the winningest traditions in all of sports and, you know, he signed my paychecks for two years so I can't complain."
