Dallas Cowboys: practice squad

Cowboys sign practice squadders

January, 3, 2011
IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys’ first bit of official 2011 business involved signing seven practice squad players on Monday, while also bringing defensive end Alex Daniels back into the fold.

The Cowboys re-signed wide receivers Troy Bergeron and Jeff Moturi, offensive tackle Robert Brewster, guard Travis Bright, tight end Jason Pociask, linebacker Kelvin Smith and cornerback Ross Weaver. Daniels was released last week to make room for Moturi because of other injuries at wide receiver.

While the practice squad might not seem that important, the Cowboys called up nine players from that unit during the season: tight end Scott Chandler, tight end Martin Rucker, wide receiver Teddy Williams, quarterback Chris Greisen, wide receiver Jesse Holley, wide receiver Manny Johnson, cornerback Bryan McCann, running back Lonyae Miller and safety Andrew Sendejo.

Cowboys add WR to practice squad

December, 29, 2010
IRVING, Texas -- With Roy E. Williams slowed by a groin injury, Jesse Holley nursing a knee injury and Sam Hurd battling headaches, the Cowboys added Jeff Moturi to the practice squad to help get through the final week of practice.

To make room for Moturi the Cowboys waived defensive end Alex Daniels.

The only healthy receivers with a full knowledge of the offense are Miles Austin and Manny Johnson, who does not have a catch in his career. Teddy Williams was called up to the active roster last week but has been playing wide receiver for only a month, and Troy Bergeron joined the practice squad on Dec. 15.

Williams did not have a catch vs. Arizona after missing the Washington game. Holley has been on the injury report the last few weeks with the sore knee. Hurd has seven catches in the last three games after having seven in the first 12.

Moturi, an Irving native, had been on the practice squads for Chicago and Green Bay this year.

Cowboys practice squad paying off

December, 16, 2010
IRVING, Texas -- Being a member of the Cowboys’ practice squad isn’t such a bad place to be this year. There’s a good chance you will be called up to the active roster.

With Manny Johnson’s call-up on Wednesday, the Cowboys have dipped into their practice squad seven times this season. In addition to Johnson, tight end Scott Chandler (Sept. 24), wide receiver Jesse Holley (Oct. 15), cornerback Bryan McCann (Nov. 4), safety Andrew Sendejo (Nov. 29), Martin Rucker and running back Lonyae Miller (Dec. 3) have been activated from the practice squad this year.

From 2007-09, the Cowboys called up five players from the practice squad: Alan Ball (2007), Mike Jefferson (2008), Alonzo Coleman (2008), Rodney Hannah (2008) and Chauncey Washington (2009).

The pay raise helps, too. Practice squad players make $5,200 per week. The rookie minimum gets you almost $19,000 per week.

Kevin Ogletree whiffs on KO attempt

December, 8, 2010
IRVING, Texas -- Maybe Jerry Jones can put Kevin Ogletree vs. Teddy Williams on the undercard the next time he hosts a boxing event at his $1.2 billion stadium.

The reserve receiver and practice squad cornerback had a couple of heated exchanges during the special teams portion of Wednesday’s practice.

Ogletree, who was working as a gunner, took offense to something Williams did and got payback with a late hit after one punt. Williams, who didn’t see the blow coming, went flying to the ground.

Williams gave Ogletree an extra shove a few plays later. The receiver responded by throwing a wild punch with his right hand. Considering that Williams was wearing a helmet, it’s fortunate for Olgetree that his haymaker didn’t connect.

It was a welcome distraction from the media’s regular duties of taking attendance and counting the R-rated words that come out of Joe DeCamillis’ mouth.

As far as attendance goes, here are the players who missed practice: Bradie James (knee), Keith Brooking (foot), Sean Lee (shoulder), Orlando Scandrick (concussion), Gerald Sensabaugh (quad), Marion Barber (calf) and Tony Romo (collarbone).

Cowboys cut practice squad CB Love

November, 30, 2009
IRVING -- The Cowboys cut cornerback Jamar Love from the practice squad Monday.

Dallas signed defensive back Marquis Floyd from West Georgia and Donovan Woods, a linebacker, from Oklahoma State.

Coach Wade Phillips said the team was looking at Floyd for some time and was able to sign Woods when a practice squad spot opened up when the team lost quarterback Rudy Carpenter to Tampa Bay.

With Carpenter gone it allows the team to give third-string quarterback Stephen McGee more reps in practice.

"He was getting the work anyway," Phillips said. "Rudy was getting some but McGee needs a lot of work as far as scout team stuff, so it was hard to have four quarterbacks."

So here is the practice squad roster: WR Manuel Johnson, WR Jesse Holley, CB Marquis Floyd, LB Donovan Woods, G Travis Bright, TE Scott Chandler and DE Marcus Dixon.

Carpenter lost from practice squad

November, 24, 2009
IRVING -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed quarterback Rudy Carpenter from the Cowboys' practice squad. The Bucs needed another quarterback because Byron Leftwich went on injured reserve.

Also, former Cowboys cornerback Mike Mickens was cut by the Bucs. Mickens was signed to the Cowboys practice squad on Sept. 6 but Tampa Bay picked him up on Nov. 2.

The Cowboys have no plans to replace Carpenter on their practice squad roster this week.

In case you forgot, here's the practice squad: G Travis Bright, TE Scott Chandler, DE Marcus Dixon, WR Jesse Holley, WR Manuel Johnson, CB Jamar Love and RB Chauncey Washington.
