IRVING -- Wade Phillips had no real answers regarding the kicking situation when talking with reporters on Tuesday. Nick Folk is competing with David Buehler for the field goal job.

It appears Folk is ahead of the game due to his experience yet, "for whatever reason he's been in a slump" Phillips said, and Buehler "he's a ways away."

Phillips said Buehler has done some field goal kicking during the year, but mainly takes care of kickoffs. Now, things are changing and it seems Buehler is rusty, according to the coach.

It was interesting to note that Phillips didn't know kicker Jason Elam, was a free agent.

Ken Hamlin will return to the starting lineup at free safety on Saturday at the Saints. Phillips said he's a good signal caller and will help the pass defense.

The Saints have the No. 1 scoring offense in the league at 35.8 points per game while the Cowboys have the 13th with 22.8. Shootout right?

"On paper it looks like a high-scoring game," Phillips said. "You never know."

Phillips mentioned the Cowboys can't give up the big play against the Saints. Quarterback Drew Brees has thrown a touchdown pass of 75 yards and his receivers have caught passes for 68, 66, 54 and 37 yards. Running back Pierre Thomas has a 36-yard catch and Reggie Bush has a 29-yarder.

With Cowboys Stadium unavailable due to the Texas-North Carolina basketball game on Saturday, the Cowboys have to simulate crowd noise outside at Valley Ranch instead of an indoor facility. Phillips wasn't sure if Southlake Carroll High School's indoor facility would be open this week.

Phillips did say there are two different game plans if DeMarcus Ware (neck) or Victor Butler starts.
Calvin Watkins joined ESPNDallas.com in September 2009. He's covered the Cowboys since 2006 and also has covered colleges, boxing and high school sports.
