Jones: Cowboys showed heart

NEW ORLEANS -- Jerry Jones always expects his team to contend for Super Bowl titles.

The Dallas Cowboys proved Saturday night that it's a possibility by upsetting the previously undefeated New Orleans Saints.

"They proved something to themselves and they sure proved something I hope to our fans," Jones said. "They showed that they do have serious heart. And they showed that they can win a game in December."

Jones laughed after the last line. He never bought into the theory that the Cowboys couldn't win big games.

Not after the loss to the New York Giants to open the month. Not after last week's loss to the San Diego Chargers, which put the Cowboys playoff hopes in serious jeopardy.

The Cowboys proved their owner right Saturday night at the Superdome. As Jones said, the Cowboys gave themselves a chance to be the team he thought they could be.

"I’ll tell you, for these guys in this locker room, it is definitely a confidence builder," he said. "It creates an awareness on their part that they can compete with the best in a hostile situation. You add that to what I think is a talented team, and it makes us have a chance."

Now the Cowboys have to follow up on this stunning upset, which won't be nearly as meaningful if they don't beat the Redskins on the road next weekend.

"People say that you can’t get that big win," LB DeMarcus Ware said. "We got that big win and I think this is going to propel us into the next two games."

Added TE Jason Witten: "We still can’t exhale. We can’t relax now."
