Dialing long distance is dicey with Suisham

IRVING, Texas -- Kicker Shaun Suisham wasn't about to second-guess the coaching decisions in his first game after signing with the Cowboys.

But Suisham is confident that he could have made field goals the two times Marion Barber was stuffed on fourth-and-1 during the second half of the 17-0 win.

Wade Phillips opted to go for it instead of having Suisham attempt 47- and 52-yard field goals in good conditions at FedEx Field.

"This is a very successful football team and we won the game," Suisham said. "When I'm asked to kick, I'll kick. My job is to prepare in those scenarios like I'm going to kick. If they don’t call on me, they don’t call on me."

Suisham believes the field goals were within his range, but his career statistics don't inspire confidence on long field goals. He is 3-of-9 from 50 yards or longer, including a miss earlier this season at Cowboys Stadium.

In other words, it's hard to blame Phillips for not calling on Suisham in those situations.
