Smiling Jones keeps Wade on hold

January, 10, 2010
ARLINGTON, Texas -- He got Jerry Jones and the Cowboys franchise its first playoff win in 13 seasons. Wade Phillips, though, still doesn't know if he'll be back as head coach next season.

"I'm not going to get into that," Jones said after Dallas' 34-14 wild-card victory over the Philadelphia Eagles Saturday night. "As I said last week, we don't need to and I don't have to get into that at all."

The much-maligned Phillips has the Cowboys riding a four-game winning streak. And his defense is playing as well as any in the league. Dallas hasn't allowed more than 17 points in any of the last four games and pithced two shutouts. They've given up 7.8 points in those games.

Still, with the Cowboys headed to the divisional round of the playoffs next week at Minnesota, Jones said he won't talk about what he plans to do with the option he holds to bring Phillips back for the 2010 season. Although he did seem to drop a hint.

"I'm superstitious and I wouldn't want to touch anything that's going pretty good," Jones said. "We'll sit down and visit about his contract after the season. I do want to put out that all systems are on go there, so I'm trite when I say that but more important is that the Cowboys have a contract and what that contract basically says is that with all the consideration with what we have today and all we have to do is say we're going to extend him, and that's in the contract."
