Jerry to Marty B: Get down to business
“No, I’m always focused,” Bennett said. “You know, ask any of my teammates.”
Maybe Marty B ought to ask the man who signs his paychecks.
Jerry Jones isn’t pleased with Bennett’s performance. Despite an increase in playing time, Bennett’s production plummeted to 15 catches for 159 yards and no touchdowns in 2009. He had 20 catches for 283 yards and four touchdowns during his promising rookie season.
“Bennett can get down to business,” said Jones, who is so tantalized by the 6-6, 265-pound Bennett’s potential that he turned down a premium pick in a midseason trade offer from the Cincinnati Bengals. “I know that he can.”
At this point in his career, Bennett is better known for his high-tech hijinks than highlights. The 2008 second-round pick has been fined a game check by the team for a profane rap posted on YouTube -- during which he wore a Cowboys helmet -- and perturbed his coaches with his seemingly constant presence on Twitter.
“I mean, there’s no internet police out there so I’m safe,” said Bennett, who had six drops and ran several routes poorly or incorrectly this season. “Yeah, YouTube is better than jail. I can always delete the video.
“For the most part I just continue to do me. I’m OK with who I am, I love being myself everyday and that’s what I preach to everyone else. I’m a fan of free-thinking, I encourage everyone to free-think and your thought-train should be differently from everybody else’s.”
Jones’ message: It’s time for Bennett to think more about football than fooling around. The owner/general manager does not see the same maturity in Bennett that he does in outside linebacker Anthony Spencer, a talented young player who enjoyed a breakout season.
“The bottom line is, we all see what a tremendous weapon he is and can be,” Jones said. “His blocking is really as impressive as his ability to be a big target for Romo. I’m confident he sees that. He’s extremely smart. He can get it. I think focus would be the word.
“He will get a lot more tweets if he’s a big-time ballplayer than he will just off of his creative ability.”
