Cowboys and Gerald Sensabaugh talking
The Cowboys placed a second-round tender on Sensabaugh, worth $1.8 million this season. The two sides have talked about a long-term deal.
Sensabaugh has until June 1 to sign his tender, if not, the Cowboys can extend the qualifying offer and retain his rights.
"We've had discussions about it," Kevin Conner, Sensabaugh's agent said Thursday morning. "However, if he does [sign the tender] we're still very confident and optimistic that a long-term deal for both sides is a top priority."
If the tender offer is greater than 110 percent of Sensabaugh's 2009 base salary (he made $650,000 last year) and he doesn't sign that contract by June 15, the team can substitute the June 1 tender with a new June 15th tender of 110 percent of the player's 2009 base salary and continue to retain exclusive rights to the player. If the player does not sign by Week 10, he cannot play in 2010.
"Gerald will continue to focus on preparing himself for the upcoming season and I will focus on making him a long-term Cowboy," Conner said.
Sensabaugh and wide receiver Miles Austin, are the only two restricted free agents who have yet to sign the tender deals.
Jones isn't concerned about their status because each is working out with the team in OTAs and expected to attend the mandatory minicamp in June.
"Those are players who are the future of our team," Jones said Tuesday from the NFL owners meetings. "I can speak emphatically they are very much a part of the future of the Dallas Cowboys."
