Brooking sees no conflict as mentor
The Cowboys drafted Jason Williams with their first pick in the 2009 draft. They traded up in the second round this year to take Sean Lee, a player they graded as a mid-first rounder.
"They were drafted to someday take my spot," Brooking said. "I mean, jeez, I’ve been hit in the head a lot, but I haven’t been hit that much."
Brooking has no beef with the business of the NFL. He's embraced his role as a mentor to the young bucks, even though they'll eventually make him expendable.
"I’m there for those guys," Brooking said. "The main thing is they’re eager to learn, to pick my brain, to ask me questions. Man, if I got a guy like that who’s extremely talented and hungry and wants to learn and I can bring something to the table to help him out, I’m all for it."
Brooking is more than willing to help prepare Lee and Williams to be starters for the Cowboys. Brooking will do whatever he thinks is ultimately in the best interests of the team.
At the same time, the competitor plans to make it as tough as possible for them to get that gig.
"They’re going to have to earn it," Brooking said. "There’s no doubt about it."
