SAN ANTONIO – Tony Romo has seen enough of Dez Bryant to call the Cowboys’ first-round pick “a good football player.”

Just how good? Romo wants to see the kid prove himself before getting carried away. Every bit of praise he gives Bryant seems to be followed by a reminder that the details determine the difference between a prospect and a producer.

“It’s always a process,” Romo said. “With a young receiver, you need him to be in certain spots and doing certain things.”

The front office and coaches are counting on Romo to help Bryant reach his immense potential. That responsibility goes far beyond throwing the ball. Jerry Jones has said that he looks forward to Romo having the opportunity to help mold Bryant as an NFL receiver, a process that consists of making sure the kid know exactly which certain spots he needs to get to and which certain things he needs to be doing.

It’s no coincidence that Romo took several reps with the second-team receivers during Saturday’s camp opener. One of the biggest benefits of Bryant signing on time was that he’d be able to work with No. 9.

So far, so good after Bryant’s camp debut.

“I thought he did a good job,” Romo said. “We’re going to go back and watch tape and we’re all going to try and see what we did good and what we didn’t.”

The fact that Bryant was the first player on the field and the last one to leave didn’t go unnoticed by the quarterback. Romo noted that the kid clearly loves football and is excited to begin his career with the Cowboys.

“It’s going to be fun,” Romo said.
