Cowboys practice report, Day 2: Pt. 2

7/25/2010

SAN ANTONIO -- The Cowboys finished their first two-a-day of training camp on Sunday. Here's the highlights of a pass-happy second practice.

*Quarterback Tony Romo looked a lot better in the second practice. He threw sharp passes to a variety of receivers and wasn't afraid to zip throws into some coverages. During the 7-on-7 passing drills, Romo was victimized by a drop from Miles Austin and a forced fumble. Jamar Wall stripped Austin after a short gain, and after a scramble for the loose ball the offense got it back.

*The secondary was very active in the second practice. Wall forced a fumble, Alan Ball picked off a pass from Jon Kitna -- though it was off a deflection -- Orlando Scandrick had an INT and Bryan McCann had a nice breakup of a pass.

*After three practices, right tackle Robert Brewster seems to be off to a slow start. Outside linebackers Anthony Spencer and Curtis Johnson each blew past Brewster during 11-on-11 drills. Johnson got a sack. Brewster has looked a little slugglish at times. Brewster also had a false start. On two defensive snaps, nose tackle Sean Lissemore was late getting off the ball, allowing the center to push him away from the line of scrimmage.

*Dez Bryant, the rookie wide receiver, continues to impress. He did a nice job of using his hands to catch a low ball and then brought the ball to his body as he hit the ground. However, there are still growing pains. Offensive cooridnator Jason Garrett and wide receivers coach Ray Sherman were talking to him about his assignments.

*Running back Marion Barber and wide receiver Patrick Crayton have had two solid days. Barber continues to run well. He's hitting holes faster and gliding through the defense. Crayton is making most of his catches and running good routes. He made a nice catch while covered by cornerback Mike Jenkins and a nice sideline catch off a Jon Kitna pass.

*Tight end Martellus Bennett (ankle), safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (shoulder), linebacker Stephen Hodge (knee) and defensive end Lorenzo Washington (hamstring) missed Sunday's practices. Linebacker Keith Brooking (knee) practiced in the afternoon after missing the morning session, and Brandon Williams (knee) missed the afternoon session after participating in the morning. Defensive end Josh Brent missed the afternoon practice with a broken bone in his left hand. He could return for Monday's practice.

*The attendance for the Sunday morning practice was 7,195 and the afternoon was 13,662. In total, 62,833 fans have attended the last three practices. ... Former San Antonio Spurs forward Bruce Bowen attended practice. Bowen is also a Cowboys fan.
