Potential roster moves for Cowboys

The Cowboys held some closed door meetings on Monday, nothing unusual, because the team is talking about its roster.

With three tight ends out, John Phillips (knee), Kevin Brock (ankle) and Scott Sicko (concussion), it leaves the team with just two healthy players at this position. In reality, it's really one, Jason Witten. Martellus Bennett missed Sunday's preseason game with the Bengals with a sprained ankle that is getting better. He didn't play against the Bengals as a precaution because the team doesn't want to rush him back.

Phillips will go on IR at some point this week leaving the Cowboys an open spot on their 80-man roster. The team will have to sign a tight end to help Jason Garrett run his two-and-three tight end sets.

Coach Wade Phillips said backup fullback Chris Gronkowski can move into those tight end spots at times because he did it in Arizona. However, Phillips would prefer Gronkowski to remain at fullback.

The cornerback situation took a blow with injuries to Cletis Gordon (sore neck) and Bryan McCann (sore chest). Their status for Thursday's game vs. Oakland is uncertain. Teddy Williams, who has no college experience, played 30 plays, more than what the team expected or ever wanted, on Sunday vs. the Bengals.

Phillips said Williams didn't play that badly but still needs work. Orlando Scandrick (finger) will play the season in pain with a surgically repaired index finger. Scandrick said he can't fully bend his finger.
The trainers don't want Scandrick to use his hand that much in practice or in preseason games if he can help it. With Gordon and McCann nicked up, Scandrick gets more snaps in the preseason.

The Cowboys have to open up another roster spot if Gordon and McCann can't play Thursday. As of now, Dallas has 12 healthy defensive backs, if you count Scandrick on that list.

Opening up another roster spot for a corner can occur if the team waives wide receiver Titus Ryan, who suffered a broken thumb vs. the Bengals.

Plenty of moves and or decisions are forthcoming with a game coming up Thursday.
