Guessing game: Who will be inactive?

One of the fun things about training camp is picking which 53 guys out of an 80-man roster are going to get cut. It can drive you mad.

Now comes more good stuff. After the Cowboys paired the roster to 53, the easy or hard part comes when guessing who will be inactive on Sundays so the Cowboys can play with 45 on gameday.

For this first game, vs. Washington, we figured injured offensive linemen Mark Colombo, Kyle Kosier and Sam Young will be inactive. Phil Costa, a backup center, would normally be inactive, but Kosier's injury gives him a chance to be up with the 45.

Who else on the offense will miss the game?

We thought about Sam Hurd, but he's too valuable of a special teams player and he was just named a captain, so to be left out is doubtful.

Kevin Ogletree is another player that possibly could sit. The Cowboys will have Roy Williams, Miles Austin and Dez Bryant active. If Hurd is active, do they really need five wide receivers active?

We think so.

When the Cowboys traded Patrick Crayton it was meant to give Ogletree more playing time and not to stop the progress of Bryant.

Chris Gronkowski should be active with Deon Anderson at fullback because the Cowboys are going with just two tight ends, John Phillips is on IR recovering from knee surgery, and Gronkowski can play HBack.

Stephen McGee is the third quarterback, so he counts on the inactives.

Now let's look at the defense.

There are questions regarding Leon Williams, Jason Williams and Brandon Williams.

We believe Jason Williams will be active because he plays special teams, and Leon and Brandon will get a sitdown. Sean Lissemore who made the roster as a result of his play the last two preseason games is basically the 53rd man on the roster.

He will sit.

Josh Brent will backup Jay Ratliff at nose tackle.

Barry Church and Danny McCray, two rookie safeties, could see significant playing time on special teams, one reason why Pat Watkins was among the first cuts of training camp. Church and McCray are two young players the Cowboys want to see on the field. But for numbers sake, Church might be inactive because McCray has a spot on the defense.

McCray is a linebacker/safety in some Dime package so the Cowboys will play him some if necessary.

Victor Butler is another possibility of sitting it out, but his play in the preseason kepts him active.

So saying all that here's who might be the unlucky seven: McGee, Kosier, Colombo, Young, Church, Leon Williams, Brandon Williams and Sean Lissemore.
