Sean Lee won't be used as nickel LB

IRVING, Texas – On draft day, the Cowboys brass basically declared that Sean Lee would replace Bobby Carpenter in the nickel package.

Carpenter was soon traded, but Lee still isn’t the Cowboys’ nickel linebacker. And he won’t be any time soon, according to Wade Phillips.

“I don’t think he’s suited for that role,” Phillips said.

That isn’t a sign that the coaches have given up on Lee contributing to the defense as a rookie.

The coaches are concerned that Keith Brooking, who turns 35 this month, will wear down if he plays every snap. Phillips indicated Wednesday that Lee could begin spelling Brooking in the base defense, as long as Lee isn’t nagged by a sore hamstring.

“I’m comfortable with him playing in the game,” Phillips said of Lee. “I think he can go in and play and do well. It’s just a matter of getting him well.”
