IRVING, Texas -- Drew Brees grew up a Cowboys fan and describes Jason Garrett’s performance as a fill-in starter on Thanksgiving Day in 1994 as “awesome.”

Brees is just as impressed by Garrett as a quarterback guru.

Garrett and Brees got to know each other a little bit during the 2006 offseason. Brees was a free agent with a bum shoulder who got strong interest from only two teams: the Saints and Dolphins. Garrett was the quarterbacks coach in Miami.

“One of the things I really liked about Miami was Jason Garrett,” Brees said during a conference call with Valley Ranch media.

What specifically did Brees like about Garrett?

“First of all, he played the quarterback position in the NFL,” Brees said. “I think that any time you have a guy that’s played this position at the highest level, they just get it. They understand what you’re thinking and what you’re feeling and what you’re seeing and all that stuff, so that helps.

“Also, I just think he seemed like a guy who was very much focused on the fundamentals of playing the quarterback position and preparation and what goes into it from a mental standpoint. He just seemed like the kind of guy who would help you become a much better player.”
