ARLINGTON, Texas -- With Kevin Ogletree out for the season after undergoing toe surgery this week, rookie cornerback Bryan McCann had a chance to regain the punt and kick return job.
McCann fumbled a punt out of bounds last week against the Eagles and a kickoff at Indianapolis the previous week. The fumble against the Eagles forced the Cowboys to bench McCann for Ogletree.
But when Ogletree went down with an injury, the team turned back to McCann for Sunday's game against the Redskins.
McCann bobbled his first punt of the game but returned it 29 yards. For the day, McCann had two punt returns for 54 yards and four kick returns for 89 yards.
Ball security is a big thing for a returner, and Jason Garrett didn't have much confidence in McCann until he proved he could make plays after securing the ball. McCann spent the week carrrying a football around with him at his house and worked on his technique of keeping the ball closer to the body when running and having the point of the ball secured with his fingers.
