IRVING, Texas -- If Jon Kitna is healthy, then he will be the Cowboys’ starting quarterback Sunday at Philadelphia, but that is a big if.

“It’s a stomach issue down there and that’s harder to deal with and harder to overcome if he’s trying to overcome pain,” owner and general manager Jerry Jones said. “You can do things with a hip pointer that you can’t do with the other. I would say there’s some work to do … He’s got a real challenge playing.”

Kitna suffered a left oblique injury in Saturday’s loss at Arizona, opening the door for Stephen McGee to play. McGee would make the first start of his career vs. the Eagles if Kitna is unavailable. In all likelihood the Cowboys will call up quarterback Chris Greisen, whom they signed to the practice squad Monday.

“I think the process is the same,” interim coach Jason Garrett said of putting together the game plan. “You try to feature the things each of the players does best and in this case it’s McGee or Kitna and you just try to tailor it to them. Stephen’s very comfortable with the system. He can really do anything we ask him to do but it goes more to the stuff he’s experienced with. But that stuff will be in the game plan. If he is forced to play we’ll try to get him in those things.”

McGee completed 11 of 17 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown against Arizona. He said he has not had more than three reps with the first-team offense during his time as Kitna’s backup.

McGee said he would prepare as if he would start, as he has done the last several weeks.

“There’s no doubt I’m excited,” McGee said. “I do what I do because I love it. Everybody talks about being a Cowboy or it must be just amazing being a quarterback. I love just to go out there and compete and play the game. I love to be in football. I love to talk football. I love the game. It’s going to be a fun week for me, just because I get to go out there and compete and do what I love to do most. It’s not daunting. I’m not like, ‘Oh, gosh, here we go.’ I’m excited about this. If I do get a chance to play, I’m going to go out there and give it my best and compete my tail off.”
