As soon as Wade Phillips was named the defensive coordinator with the Houston Texans, he quickly went after a coach he had under him with the Dallas Cowboys.

Phillips is interested in getting linebackers coach Reggie Herring, who worked with him for three seasons. The Cowboys have not granted permission to the Texans to speak with Herring. Safeties coach Brett Maxie is another coach Phillips could grab. Maxie played for Phillips in New Orleans.

The Cowboys have four coaches whose contracts expire shortly in Ray Sherman (wide receivers), Wade Wilson (quarterbacks), John Garrett (tight ends) and Chris Boniol (kicking).

So the offseason might be pretty busy for new coach Jason Garrett in terms of dealing with his staff.

Calvin Watkins joined ESPNDallas.com in September 2009. He's covered the Cowboys since 2006 and also has covered colleges, boxing and high school sports.
