IRVING, Texas -- When Josh Thomas’s phone rang he thought it was another joke.

“I’d been getting prank calls,” Thomas said. “I got a 972 number on there and I didn’t know what to expect. I got the phone call from the Cowboys and it’s kind of surreal.”

Thomas, a cornerback from Buffalo, was at the house of his grandmother, Eva Robinson, in Dallas. He grew up in her living room watching Cowboys games and on Saturday was talking to owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

“He said, ‘Are you there?’” Thomas joked. “And I asked, ‘Are you there?’ because I was in disbelief that I was talking to Jerry Jones.”

Thomas had hoped to go earlier than the fifth round (No. 143 overall). He was coached at the East-West Shrine Game by secondary coach Brett Maxie and said he felt comfortable right away. The Cedar Hill grad took part in the Cowboys’ Dallas Day workout at Cowboy Stadium earlier in the month.

“I expected to go in the second day and I didn’t,” Thomas said, “so after that point on I just wanted to be drafted by the team that wanted me the most and that was Dallas. I couldn’t be more grateful.”
