Shaun Chapas adds competition at FB

April, 30, 2011
IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys' seventh-round pick, Georgia fullback Shaun Chapas, will be busy proving he can make the roster in 2011.

Chapas will not only try to wrestle the starting fullback spot from Chris Gronkowski, but he'll also have to make sure he's productive on special teams.

At Georgia, Chapas played all four of the major special teams units: kickoffs, kickoff returns, punt coverage and punt returns. In his senior season, the Georgia captain participated in just two.

Gronkowski struggled at times on special teams. He missed a block leading to Dez Bryant's season-ending injury on a kickoff.

Chapas will get the chance to make the team here, and one way to do it is playing well on special teams.

"I'm assuming I'm going to come in and fight hard and do what I can and try to contribute anyway I can," he said.

Chapas is the first fullback taken in the draft by the Cowboys since Deon Anderson was selected in the sixth round of the 2007 draft. Anderson lasted four seasons until he was released after Week 2 last season -- the team wanted to use a younger and healthier player in Gronkowski.

By drafting Chapas, it appears new coach Jason Garrett is adding more competition to the fullback position.

"I'm going to come in and do everything that I can," Chapas said.
Calvin Watkins joined in September 2009. He's covered the Cowboys since 2006 and also has covered colleges, boxing and high school sports.
