COPPELL, Texas -- For a brief time this weekend, Jason Witten was back on a football field. It wasn’t for the Cowboys but for a football camp he was hosting at Coppell High School.

“Just teaching it up I realized I’m a little rusty,” Witten said. “It does feel good to get back out here and anytime you can do a camp like this it’s such an opportunity to give back and have that many kids out there.”

More than 270 kids were at the two-day camp the concluded Sunday. It was the second year Witten has had the camp, and he also runs a camp in his hometown of Elizabethton, Tenn.

“This is something I want to do every year and hopefully it’ll get bigger and bigger,” Witten said.

Witten hopes to be back on the field at the Cowboys’ Valley Ranch field soon. He was among the 20 or so players that worked out at the facility Friday when the lockout was temporary lifted. By the end of the day there was a temporary stay on the injunction that lifted the lockout.

“It’s tough because it was almost like the first day of school,” Witten said. “You go in and everybody’s so excited and anxious to get started. Personally you do know how important this time is and for that to get taken away, it’s a bit of a tease because you felt it was about to get started and the writing was on the wall. Now you go back to the old system of getting locked out."

Witten is among a handful of veteran players, including Tony Romo and Bradie James, who will organize practices.

“We’re going to have to discuss it again because it’s changed in the last couple of days,” Witten said. “We’ve got to do the work whether there’s a lockout or not. We can’t go the next two months and not have on-the-field activities. We’re going to rally to together and put the work on so when training camp comes we’ll be a better team.”
