IRVING, Texas -- Tony Romo's attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open begins this morning at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas.
Romo will tee off at 7:40 a.m. at the local qualifier. If Romo moves, the sectional qualifier is at Dallas Athletic Club.
Romo advanced to the sectional qualifier last year after surviving a playoff in the local qualifier at Honors Golf Club. He had to withdraw from the sectional at The Club at Carlton Woods at The Woodlands outside Houston after a series of weather delays. He was tied for 10th after his opening 18 holes with a 71 but was 7 over when lightning forced a delay. Romo flew home in order to take part in an organized team activity at Valley Ranch.
The U.S. Open will be held June 16-19 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.
Romo is among a handful of professional athletes attempting to qualify for the U. S. Open this year. According to the USGA, only five have made the tournament: quarterback John Brodie, tennis players Frank Conner and Ellsworth Vines, major-leaguer Sam Byrd and ex-NHL player Bill Ezinicki.
