IRVING, Texas -- With Terence Newman all but declared out of Sunday’s season opener at the New York Jets and Mike Jenkins suffering a knee injury in Wednesday’s practice the Cowboys are preparing as if Orlando Scandrick and Alan Ball will be their starting cornerbacks.

Scandrick and Ball started three of the four preseason games with Gerald Sensabaugh and Abram Elam working as the safeties. Second-year cornerback Bryan McCann would be the third cornerback if Jenkins is unable to play.

The Jets’ top three wide receivers are Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason.

“The benefit is that me, Alan, Bryan, Gerald and Abe have prepared together through the preseason,” Scandrick said. “Now, it’s going to be a challenge. I’m not going to sit up there and not tell you. It’s going to be a challenge when you go against those caliber of wide receivers. I know for me personally I’m going to be ready to embrace the challenge and I’m confident my guys are going to be ready to embrace the challenge.”
