EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Before he left MetLife Stadium wearing a protective boot on his foot, cornerback Orlando Scandrick wasn't sure what was wrong with his ankle.

He sprained it at some point in the first half and was carted from the sidelines to the locker room and didn't return. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Scandrick suffered a high-ankle sprain and the team didn't get a good look at it during an X-ray exam.

Officially, Scandrick has a sprained ankle and his status will be determined further Monday.

"I don’t know how long I'm going to be out," Scandrick said. "But I fully expect us not to miss a beat and for [the backups] to step up. I have no idea what’s wrong with me."

Backups Alan Ball and Bryan McCann had one pass breakup each. Mike Jenkins (shoulder) was knocked out of the game, but returned in the fourth quarter.

Along with not having Terence Newman (groin) the Cowboys were shorthanded at cornerback and at one point had just two healthy corners, Ball and McCann, on the field.

The Jets have some outstanding receivers, but the group didn't take over the game for any long stretches. Santonio Holmes finished with six catches for 70 yards and Plaxico Burress, in his first NFL game after serving nearly two years in prison, had four catches for 72 yards and a touchdown. Veteran Derek Mason, the No. 3 receiver, had three catches for 19 yards. Quarterback Mark Sanchez focused his throws to the running backs and tight ends in the early portions of the game and when Scandrick and Jenkins were out for an extensive period, he targeted the wideouts.

"They have good receivers," Scandrick said of the Jets. "When I was out there, I told you we were going to compete and it was going to be a challenge and we were going to have to compete to win the game."
