IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys were able to sneak punter Chris Jones through waivers and re-sign him to the practice squad.
The team was worried Jones would be claimed after averaging 43 yards on three punts vs. Seattle, which would have left them without cover in case Mat McBriar’s injury took a turn for the worse. McBriar has a nerve problem in his left leg that affects his foot, but he was able to punt last week vs. Buffalo.
McBriar said the leg is improving but he still lacks strength, which is why he has to wear a contraption that helps lift his foot. He is not likely to hold until he is 100 percent.
Jones, who was among the final cuts in training camp, will be able to at least give the Cowboys some insurance if McBriar cannot punt later in the year.
