Cowboys miss on TCU safety

When you're watching the playoff games this weekend, take a look at San Francisco 49ers safety Colin Jones.

Jones, a TCU product, backed up former Cowboys draft pick safety Stephen Hodge in college.

Jones emerged in his senior season, finishing second on the team with 80 tackles while starting in 12 of 13 games. In the Rose Bowl, Jones finished with a career-high 10 tackles.

Still this wasn't enough for the Cowboys to take a look at the Jones, who is from Bridgeport, Texas, about an hour northwest of Fort Worth. Jones ran a 4.34 40 at TCU's Pro Day and when the Cowboys held their annual Dallas Day, which invites area and college players playing for area schools to meet with the coaches and front office personnel, he didn't get a call.

"I was unsure where I would go," Jones said Friday as he prepared for the 49ers playoff game against the New Orleans Saints. "I had a real god Pro Day and teams started to take interest. On draft day it was nice to get a call, I never got any contact with the Cowboys. I was a Cowboys fan growing up," Jones said. "I was surprised I never got contacted for that."

The 49ers drafted Jones in the sixth round with the hope he could make the team on special teams and help out some on defense.

Jones was active for the first game but sent to the practice squad the next three weeks, missing the Week 2 game against the Cowboys.

"I wanted to play in that game," Jones said.

Jones was taken off the practice squad and has played in 13 games this season and compiled eight special teams tackles.

NFL teams miss all the time with players, but the Cowboys' struggles this season with secondary depth was telling. They tired to fix things by signing veteran corner Frank Walker and he did play well early, but struggled for about two months.

Special teams play had a mixture of players but Jones could have added something especially when special teams ace Danny McCray went down with an ankle injury late in the season.

But Jones isn't worried about not playing for the Cowboys here, because he's having a good time in the postseason for the 49ers.

"It's been a lot of fun living in California," Jones said. "Had a good run and the coaches have been great. I had to make the team on special teams and that was huge for me. I can utilize my speed and that's why I made the team."
