Tony Romo excused from camp this week
The coaches want to give backup quarterbacks Kyle Orton, Stephen McGee and Rudy Carpenter the work Wednesday through Friday because once the team begins practicing in Oxnard, Calif., on July 30, Romo will get the bulk of repetitions.
Orton did not take part in the June minicamp because of a slight hamstring injury, which allowed McGee to take the No. 2 snaps. Carpenter was limited in his offseason work because of an oblique strain but was able to take snaps in June. McGee, who is entering the final year of his contract, and Carpenter are battling for the No. 3 quarterback spot, but it's possible the team only keeps two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.
Once training camp practices begin in Oxnard, Romo will typically take six snaps during every team and seven-on-seven period, followed by four for Orton and McGee and Carpenter splitting two.
