W2W4: First day of practices for Cowboys
Practice times: Per the collective bargaining agreement, the Cowboys will not be in pads until Wednesday. So we'll see a walkthrough session starting at 12:30 a.m. CT followed by a 4:30 p.m. CT practice session with the full team in helmets and shorts.
Who will not practice: Mike Jenkins (shoulder), Mackenzy Bernadeau (hip, knee), Danny Coale (foot) and Kevin Kowalski (ankle) are on the physically unable to perform list and won't be available. Matt Johnson (leg) will be taken off the PUP list and made available to practice. Jenkins is scheduled to visit Dr. James Andrews regarding his recovery from shoulder surgery. Felix Jones (shoulder) and Gerald Sensabaugh (knee) are supposed to practice today, but how much hasn't yet been determined given that they've had offseason surgeries.
Morris Claiborne vs. Dez Bryant: Not sure how much we'll see this matchuup, but the Cowboys' first-round pick of 2012 against the 2010 first-round pick might provide some interesting results in early workouts. Claiborne, the dynamic cornerback from LSU, likes to play man-to-man. Bryant, the talented wide receiver, embraces a physical corner. Should be good to see. It will also be interesting to see if Claiborne works with the first-team defense. Orlando Scandrick and Brandon Carr have worked with the first-team during offseason workouts with Claiborne and Jenkins out with injuries.
The starting guards are?: The Cowboys made some offseason moves to improve the interior of the offensive line. Nate Livings and Bernadeau were signed in the offseason for more than $30 million. Livings should get some first-team snaps but Bernadeau is out with injuries. David Arkin, Ronald Leary and Bill Nagy could see time with the first team at one of the guard positions.
The fight for the No. 3 receiver starts: Miles Austin and Bryant are the starters -- and that's certain. Kevin Ogletree, Dwayne Harris, Raymond Radway, Andre Holmes and Cole Beasley get their first shots at the No. 3 spot.
By the way: All the regulars, Tony Romo, Jason Witten, Jay Ratliff, DeMarcus Ware, DeMarco Murray, Miles Austin, Doug Free and Tyron Smith, are expected to practice today.
Weight-loss challenge: If you visit the practice today you might notice a lighter Skip Peete. The Cowboys running backs coach has lost significant weight. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has done the same. It's been estimated the two coaches have lost about 100 pounds between the two.
