Cowboys to take Matt Johnson off PUP
Johnson was placed on the physically unable to perform list Wednesday and missed the three-day camp at Valley Ranch for rookies, first-year players, quarterbacks and selected veterans because of a hamstring injury. He suffered the injury on the final day of the June minicamp, which was also the only day of on-field work he had in the offseason, and aggravated it in Tuesday’s conditioning test.
The Cowboys drafted Johnson in the fourth round out of Eastern Washington and plan to have him compete for the starting safety spot opposite Gerald Sensabaugh. Because of league rules, Johnson was unable to take part in the offseason program.
Cornerback Mike Jenkins (shoulder), guard Mackenzy Bernadeau (knee, hip), wide receiver Danny Coale (foot) and guard/center Kevin Kowalski (ankle) remain on the active/PUP list.
