Cowboys taking on Jason Garrett's identity
“He’s a billionaire,” defensive end Marcus Spears said. “He can say what he wants to.”
So far, the players have remained quiet. In the past years they seemed to get swallowed up in the hype of Super Bowl or bust talk or fell in love with the Hard Knocks’ cameras.
“We’re just focused, man,” Spears said. “We’re focused in. We’re taking on the identity of our head coach. We don’t need to portray whatever type of team we are through the press or through talking. We’ve just got to go to work and lay the foundation so we can be a good football team.”
The core of this team has been whittled down basically to Tony Romo, Jason Witten, DeMarcus Ware, Jay Ratliff and Spears. Witten got off the plane last Saturday and came up with the de facto slogan of camp, saying this season can’t be the same old story.
“All 32 teams believe they can win the Super Bowl, so really there’s no need to say that,” Spears said. “That should be understood and if it’s not the goal then we shouldn’t even be practicing. That’s what we’re focused on. It’s a step-by-step process. To go ahead and talk about what’s going to happen, what we’re going to do is really water under the bridge. We don’t need to talk. Until you start playing games you don’t know who you are yet.”
