Play of the day: Raymond Radway burns Morris Claiborne

OXNARD, Calif. -- Add Raymond Radway to the disturbingly long list of receivers who have beaten first-round pick Morris Claiborne deep since the beginning of rookie camp.

That list also includes Tim Benford, Cole Beasley, Dwayne Harris and Dez Bryant, although Benford (drop) and Harris (overthrow) didn’t catch the ball after getting behind Claiborne. The Raymond burning was the worst of the bunch.

Raymond, a sprinter at Abilene Christian, toasted Claiborne by two steps on a post route. It was an easy touchdown pass for Tony Romo.

To Claiborne’s credit, he bounced back the next rep and broke up pass to Dez Bryant on a streak route down the sideline. That play displayed the kind of unshakable confidence a cornerback needs to have.

“If you play corner in this league, at some point, they’re gonna get you,” secondary coach Jerome Henderson said. “After they get you, you’ve got to come back and play with discipline, technique and focus the next play and say, ‘It’s not happening again.’”

The play also provided a glimpse of the big-play potential from Radway that excited the Cowboys’ coaches and front office last summer. We hadn’t seen that since he suffered a gruesome broken leg on the final play of the preseason, an injury that required a rod to be surgically inserted into his leg.

If the raw but speedy Radway regains last summer’s form, he’ll be a major factor in a wide-open receiver race.
