OXNARD, Calif. -- The Dallas Cowboys placed wide receiver Cole Beasley on the reserve/left squad list after he told coach Jason Garrett his heart wasn't in football.

"Cole came into my office yesterday and said, he wasn't going to play football anymore," Garrett said Saturday morning. "And we sat down and had a little visit and for now we put him on the left team exempt list. We do get a roster exception for him and we'll continue to evaluate the situation."

Garrett said Beasley spoke with mental health consultant Dr. Jacqualene Stephens and Bryan Wansley, the director of player development.

"He just said it wasn't in his heart at this time," Garrett said.

Beasley, an undrafted free agent from SMU, looked good in offseason workouts, but was in a tough battle to make the team against a slew of receivers.

"Sometimes for a young player when you get into training camp, sometimes you don't feel like you like football when you're going through a two-a-day type schedules and all of that," Garrett said who was surprised by Beasley's decision.

Beasley is the second player to leave camp for personal reasons. Tight end John Nalbone returned home to take care of a personal matter.
