OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys have conducted seven practices and now are just a week away from their first preseason game at Oakland on Aug. 13.
What's left?: The Cowboys will have five practices in six days to get ready for Oakland. The team has to deal with key injuries to at least 18 players, and coach Jason Garrett needs to manage the snaps of several young players to get them ready for the preseason opener.
Mike Jenkins goes to doctor: Cornerback Mike Jenkins is scheduled to visit Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., today to have his surgically repaired shoulder examined. Andrews performed the surgery on Jenkins and the club wants to see if he'll clear the cornerback for practice. It's doubtful Jenkins would practice this week -- if at all -- if he's cleared. He might do work in the walkthroughs for three days, per the CBA, before returning.
Could Coale return this week?: Rookie receiver Danny Coale could return to the practice fields this week. He won't practice today, but there's a strong chance he could go by the end of the week. Coale (foot) is ahead of veteran guard Mackenzy Bernadeau (hip and knee) in terms of getting ready to practice.
McGee needs to rebound: Stephen McGee didn't perform well in the Blue and White scrimmage but it's not the end of the world. The Cowboys love his arm and smarts, but he's inconsistent. This is a great time for McGee to show the coaches his roster spot shouldn't be in doubt by coming up with a strong practice Monday. Tim Benford, who had a dazzling day during the scrimmage, has to build on that. Draft picks Tyrone Crawford and Kyle Wilber impressed Jerry Jones from the scrimmage and must continue to practice well starting today.
