OXNARD, Calif. -- Most of the discussion so far concerning the Cowboys’ running backs has centered on DeMarco Murray and the expectations as he enters his second year.

The talk about Felix Jones has centered on him failing the conditioning test and sitting out for some “remedial” running.

Jones has yet to have that stick-your-foot-in-the-ground-and-go run yet in camp.

“He’s OK,” running backs coach Skip Peete said. “He’s running good and done a nice job as far as (making) some good decisions in his reads in the running game since he’s been back with us. He’s done some real good things in the pass game. I’m real excited about that. I think he’s stepped up there this year.”

Jones averaged only 6.7 yards per catch on 33 receptions in 2011. In 2010, he had 48 catches for 450 yards and a touchdown. He had offseason shoulder surgery that kept him out of the organized team activities and minicamp, so how much did that bother him last year?

“A lot more than you knew,” Peete said. “He really couldn’t raise his arm above his shoulder. Sometimes I was hoping the ball wouldn’t go to him because he couldn’t extend his arm. He fought through it the whole season and played in a lot of pain. Obviously he had to get it fixed and he’s doing fine now.”
